The Royal Navy used a number if different versions of the Grumman Wildcat throughout the Second World War, starting with the takeover of a production batch originally ordered by the French. Christened the Martlet in Royal Navy service, they often differed from their U.S Navy counterparts. The variant most closely related to its American equivalent was the Martlet MK.IV which featured the same 6-gun folding wing of the F4F-4 but was instead powered by a Wright R-1820-40B Cyclone in a more compact cowling.
